#138: The Immaculate Collection, Madonna

This is my favorite RS blurb so far because the person who wrote it clearly hates Madonna.

Listen to the first sentence: “Like the 1987 remix album, You Can Dance, this is a perfect Madonna CD: nothing but good songs.” Code for: I have been burned by Madonna fans before and now I know exactly what to say.

The second sentence: “You get timeless pop such as … a new Lenny Kravitz-co-produced sex jam, “Justify My Love,” which samples Public Enemy.” Code for: I did the research but I have nothing else positive to say.

And that’s it! That’s the whole review. I love it, I only wish that they’d let this person rail against Madonna like they wanted to. “For some reason everyone loves Madonna. I don’t know why this album is the twentieth-bestselling album of all time, but it is. This is the world we live in, and we all have to deal with it.”

Anyway, I happen to like Madonna very much, even after she hopped up on that table at the TIDAL press conference. Fun fact, Madonna dedicated this album to “the Pope,” which was her nickname for Christopher Ciccone, her brother.

FAVORITE SONGS:

“Lucky Star — US ReMix Version” — I love the “wishing on a star” imagery whenever it pops up in songs. How human!

“Borderline — Remix” — Madonna’s gospel choirs add so much.

“Like A Virgin”And you maa-aa-aake me feel! Shiny and new!

“Material Girl” — I’m not so much a fan of the message of this song but man is it a jam. My favorite part are the robot background singers who go “Li-ving-in-a-mat-er-i-al-world.”

“Into the Groove — Edit” — I didn’t know this was a Madonna song!

“Papa Don’t Preach” — This song always makes me think of Glee, lol.

“La Isla Bonita — Remix” — I liked this one only because it was so different from the rest, I think.

“Like a Prayer” — I think this is Madonna’s best song/one of the best songs ever. I love the chorus, the hymnal organ intro, how fast it picks up, so much. It’s like a dream! Let the choir sing!

“Express Yourself” — Remember when Madonna was annoyed at Lady Gaga for “ripping off” this song with “Born This Way”? I think she was wrong.

“Vogue” — CLASSIC. I think Madonna’s voice is so cool in this song.

LEAST FAVORITE SONGS:

“Holiday” — I don’t care. I’m sorry but this song drives me up the wall. She sounds like a member of Alvin & the Chipmunks.

“Crazy for You — Edit” — Her voice sounds awesome here! This song is just kind of boring.

“Justify My Love” — Maybe I’ve just been listening to too much Garbage, but it sounds like she’s doing a Shirley Manson impression here. (Yeah, I know it’s probably the other way around.)

IS RS FULL OF IT?

No. Nobody is full of it here, neither the RS Gods nor the RS Underling who wrote this. Madonna is fantastic, and because of this, we all have to suffer.
