#111: Control, Janet Jackson
We’ve heard two Michael Jackson albums already, so I’m ready for the final Jackson. In fact, Janet Jackson is the youngest Jackson. Probably most people know that, but it’s new information to me.
This is Jackson’s third album, but the first one that she recorded without her father working as her manager. She had also recently gotten a marriage annulled, so this is like her mea culpa or something. That’s pretty cool, I knew there was some explanation for the theme as soon as I heard the first song.
Finally, this whole album is the most eighties thing I’ve ever heard or seen. Look at the shoulder pads on this album cover! Also that bouncy laser backbeat? I want it on every song I ever listen to for the rest of my life, thank you very much.
“Control” — THIS IS A STORY ABOUT CONTROL. MY CONTROL. Janet, baby, tell me more!
“Nasty” — I recognized this song! My first name ain’t Baby/ It’s Janet.
“What Have You Done For Me Lately” — This was definitely my favorite song on the album. What have YOU done for me lately? Hm?
“The Pleasure Principle” — It’s a shame that Janet’s voice isn’t as incredible as MJ’s.
“He Doesn’t Know I’m Alive” — This is an earworm, and I love her backup singers!
“Let’s Wait Awhile” — Slow and cheesy, which is my kryptonite — so why do I love it?
“Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)” — When she speaks that horrendous French at the beginning and end of this song, it just feels right.
LEAST FAVORITE SONGS:
“You Can Be Mine” — This one is a little too robotic for me.
IS RS FULL OF IT?
I’m so glad we’ve finally gotten to an eighties pop album. This sound ruled the world for a little while, and I never have a bad time when I get to hear one.
